Enter Northville Buy Michigan Now Festival Recipe Contest
- From a Buy Michigan Now press release
For the Michiganders who have a passion for cooking or baking, put on your aprons and get ready to perfect your famous Michigan-ingredient recipes because Hiller’s Markets and the Buy Michigan Now campaign, are holding the 3rd Annual “We’re Cooking in Michigan” Contest in conjunction with this year’s Buy Michigan Now Festival (August 3-5 in downtown Northville). Entries are being accepted June 21 – July 21, 2012, and the final cook-off will be held at the festival on Saturday, August 4 with special guests doing the judging.
There’s no shortage of delicious Michigan-grown fruits and vegetables in the summer, and all year round wonderful locally produced cheeses, meats, grains and other grocery items take a starring role on Michiganders’ plates.
With this in mind, the primary ingredients of the recipe submitted in the “We’re Cooking in Michigan” contest must be Michigan-grown or produced, with at least 75 percent of the total ingredients stemming from Michigan. Recipes must be submitted via the online form or in person via the recipe submission drop box at Hiller’s Market in Northville by midnight July 21, 2012. Four finalists will be selected and notified by July 28 to compete in the final cook-off during the festival at 3 PM on Saturday, August 4.
At the festival, one grand prize winner will be chosen. The grand prize winner will receive a $250 Hiller’s Markets gift card, and their recipe will be sold at Hiller’s locations for one month with profits benefitting a Michigan charity of the grand prize winner’s choice. Second and third place winners will also be selected and each will receive a $100 Hiller’s gift card, while the fourth place winner takes home a $50 Hiller’s gift card.
Last year, thousands of people attended the Buy Michigan Now Festival, aimed at promoting Michigan’s myriad of products and encouraging people to support the state’s economy by buying locally. This year’s event includes live music, kid-friendly activities, sidewalk sales, a variety of Michigan vendors, and of course, plenty of great local food.
Hiller’s Markets is an avid advocate of Michigan products, labeling items in its stores to help customers choose home-grown fare - anything from gourmet ice-creams and desserts to fresh salsa and tortilla chips.
“Supporting our own—the wonderful produce and products that Michigan has to offer—is one of my personal mantras,” says Justin Hiller, vice-president of Hiller’s Markets. “I hope this competition will give some of our state’s cooks a real chance to explore all the great food options available locally. It’s good for our environment and good for our economy.”
Lisa Diggs, founder of Buy Michigan Now, adds: “We’re always excited to partner with our friends at Hiller’s to highlight Michigan foods. This recipe contest has become one of my personal favorite aspects of the festival. It’s really fun to see how creative and talented people can be when it comes to serving up the best of Michigan.”
