The Novi Police Department is pleased to announce the graduation of Sergeant Scott Baetens from the School of Police Staff and Command (SPSC) at Eastern Michigan University on Oct. 26. Baetens graduated third in the class of 20 law enforcement professionals and served as class president. This class represented 17 different communities from southeast Michigan participating in the 10-month program.
“The SPSC program was a great opportunity for me to learn the next level of law enforcement management,” said Baetens. “I look forward to bringing new knowledge back to the Novi Police Department and sharing it throughout the organization.”
The School of Police Staff and Command provides upper-level academic instruction in a total of six core blocks of instruction and utilizes more than 30 additional optional blocks of instruction during each session. Major topics of study include management and management theory, grant writing, human resources for law enforcement, budgeting, staffing allocation and homeland security. The program has graduated more than 2,000 students since its creation in 1985.
“I am extremely proud of Sergeant Baetens’ professional, as well as academic accomplishments,” said Novi Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police David Molloy. “The Staff and Command program provides students with the education and training needed to strengthen their capabilities with the Novi Police Department, while also enhancing resources to the citizens of Novi.”
Baetens began his career with the Novi Police Department in 2001 after graduating from Michigan State University with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. During his time with the Novi Police Department, Baetens has held numerous assignments, including serving as a field training officer and detective. He is currently working toward a master’s degree in technology studies at Eastern Michigan University with a concentration in homeland security and emergency management.
