Survivors of Traumatic Brain Injuries To Showcase Art in Novi

Novi has declared March as Traumatic Brain Injury Awareness Month.

The City of Novi is proud to partner with Cassell and Associates to bring awareness to survivors of traumatic brain injuries by showcasing their clients' artwork in the Novi Civic Center Atrium March 1 through April 28.

Mayor Bob Gatt proclaimed March 2013 as Traumatic Brain Injury Awareness Month in Novi at the Feb. 25 City Council meeting.

Thirty-five clients of Cassell and Associates, whose work helps brain injury survivors move beyond survival to a life filled with purpose, triumph and pride, have been working on their pieces since last fall. Included in the exhibit are watercolors, acrylics and pottery pieces available for viewing and purchasing.

One of Cassell’s clients, Greg, shared his thoughts about art. “When we resist change it’s called suffering. When we can let go and not struggle against change it’s called enlightenment. I am compelled to create and fine art is my path," he said.

Since 1989, Cassell & Associates has been providing satisfying and meaningful vocational opportunities for clients with traumatic brain injuries. Their primary goal is to provide a fun, yet challenging and low stress work environment that allows clients to continue to gradually heal and rehabilitate on mental, physical and emotional levels. By providing them with creative and non-traditional work opportunities, clients are better able to adjust and further develop lives filled with purpose, integrity, kindness and joy.

The exhibit opening will take place on Thursday, March 7, from 5 to 8 p.m. The artists and their families will be present to greet the community. Proceeds from artwork sales will be donated to the Brain Injury Association of Michigan.
