School Board to Decide Whether Novi Principal Stays with District After 'Super Drunk' Charges

Kim Warren, principal of Novi's Deerfield Elementary, was arrested on April 8 on charges of being intoxicated on school grounds.

The Novi Community Schools board of education will likely decide the future of Kim Warren's employment status with the district at its May 16 meeting, said Novi schools Superintendent Steve M. Matthews.

Warren, the Deerfield Elementary School principal who was arrested under the suspicion of being intoxicated on school grounds, is currently using her sick days to be on paid leave, he said.

"The board [of education] will be asked to make a decision if she does not resign," he said.

According to Matthews, Warren has certain contractual protections that the district needs to honor. He said the board will make its decision soon, probably at its May 16 meeting.

Warren, 44, of Brighton was suspended from her position after being arrested by Novi Police on April 8 and according to WXYZ, Warren’s results from two breathalyzer tests registered at .21 and then .20, more than twice the legal limit.

When Warren was placed on administrative leave, Novi Meadows Elementary School sixth grade Principal Lisa Finchel was moved to Deerfield to serve in the interim. Novi Meadows teacher Matt Burry took Finchel's place as interim principal at Meadows.

Matthews said both Finchel and Burry will remain in their interim positions until the end of the school year.
