Snyder Vetoes Bill That Would Have Allowed Guns in Schools
The bill would have allowed concealed weapons in gun-free zones such as schools and sports arenas.
Gov. Rick Snyder has vetoed a bill that would have allowed concealed weapons into public schools and sports arena, according to a report on Michigan Public Radio.
The Michigan Legislature passed Senate Bill 59 late last week that would have allowed concealed weapons in gun-free zones, but in the wake of the school shooting in Newtown, CT, many had called for Snyder to veto the legislation.
David Hecker, Michigan President of American Federation of Teachers (AFT) said in a Friday statement, "We’re aghast that this lame duck legislature thinks it’s a good idea to put MORE guns in our schools, let alone places of worship or sports arenas...The House passed SB 59 on Thursday. How dare these lame duck legislators put the safety of students, educators and communities at risk. As our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims of today’s tragedy in Connecticut, we call on Governor Snyder to veto this ill-considered bill."
On Monday, Snyder said he would re-evaluate the bill, and on Tuesday, he vetoed it.

Yes, I do agree with Gov. Synder. Also think there should be strickter laws on owning high power assault weapons and more stricktter back ground check.

Making guns more available will just insure more children getting killed.
You don't need an assault weapon to go hunting deer or anything else except humans.

So far the NRA types haven't found this forum. When they do, get ready for a million and one reasons why we need MORE guns, everywhere. When you point out that the shooter had on a Kevlar vest, there are yet more reasons everyone should be "packing".
We were in Arizona recently, and saw a huge guy covered in tattoos and piercings get off a motorcycle and come into the Subway where we had ordered lunch. I almost died when I saw a HUGE pistol at his hip, in a holster. If I wanted to live in the "wild west" I'd move there. With the changes Snyder has foisted on us, he has to realize he is changing the very nature of our home state. It doesn't feel like home any more. I'm glad he didn't sign this bill. We are already a laughing stock.

Denise, an NRA type has found this forum. However, I agree with Snyder signing the law. I do believe that the laws need be examined. What I do find offensive is that just because a guy is huge and has tattoos that you label him as a threat. Arizona has less murders than Michigan. Hello, Detroit is the murder capital of the country. Chicago is not far behind and guns are outlawed in that city! While you are not living in the Wild West you are living in the murder equivalent of Kabul.

Actually we've been here all along. Your FEELINGS have nothing - NOTHING - to do with my rights. This bill will get resurrected in 2013. It was bad timing. How you "feel" about guns is of no consequence. LOGIC tells you that ALL mass casualty shooting take place in gun free zones. The immediate answer is to eliminate them. If that bothers you, don't go there. You have no idea who is armed around you at any moment, or what their intentions are. In case you didn't notice, it's already against the law to SHOOT PEOPLE. How is that working out? By my best observation - about as well as Prohibition.
