Remember These 8 Food Safety Tips During Your Cookouts

Follow these tips from Fox Run Retirement Community for healthy summer cooking.

Summer is a superb time for cookouts and picnics. It's important to stay safe and healthy by following certain steps when preparing food for your outdoor fun.

Fox Run Retirement Community’s dining services offers these food safety tips:

  1. Wash hands before preparing food and between handling raw and ready-to-eat foods.
  2. Keep raw food separate from cooked food.
  3. Prevent cross contamination from marinades. Always marinate raw food in the refrigerator, never on the counter. If you use marinade as a sauce on the cooked food, reserve a portion of the marinade before putting the raw meat or poultry in it.
  4. Use different plates to carry raw meats and cooked meats to and from the grill.
  5. Keep cold food below 40 degrees Fahrenheit and hot food above 140 degrees Fahrenheit.
  6. Cook poultry until the meat is white. Internal temperature is best at 170 degrees.
  7. Cook hamburgers until there are no traces of pink in the center or blood in the juice.
  8. Cook fish until it flakes.
