Novi Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services in partnership with Family Self Defense Center, (FSDC), recently achieved the “Triple Crown” of Isshinryu Karate. Student’s earned wins in kata, weapons and sparring in three of Isshiniryu Karate’s biggest tournaments: The Isshinryu Hall of Fame, the KIAI Grand Nationals and the World Isshinryu Karate Championship.
FSDC has been burning up the tournament circuits for several years now, earning over 1000 trophies in the last three years in preparation for the 2013 tournament season. The tournaments this summer involved competitors from across the US, Canada, Europe, Asia and Australia, and were judged by 9th and 10th Dan Masters in Isshinryu. Grand Master Kichiro Shimabuku, current head of the WIKA and son of Isshinryu founder Tatsuo Shimabuku, came in from Okinawa to oversee the World Competition which hosted over 500 competitors.
The KIAI Grand National: 30 students from FSDC took 61 awards including 24 first place National Championships, 6 Grand Championship berths and 1 Grand Championship win.
The Isshinryu Hall of Fame Nationals: 15 students from FSDC took 20 awards with 3 first place National Championships, and 2 Grand Championship berths.
The school, Senseis and students received 14 National “Top Five” Award nominations, and 2 National Award winners. This is the 8th year FSDC has been nominated as one of the Top Five Isshinryu Schools in the Country.
The Isshinryu World Karate Association Tournament: 32 students from FSDC took 29 awards with 13 first place World Champions, and 1 Black Belt Grand Championship berth. The dojo was also selected as one of the “Top Three Most Supportive” dojos in the world for the tournament.
Prior to these tournaments, FSDC competed in the annual Detroit Metropolitan Open held in May. Forty seven students earned 98 awards which included 32 first place tournament winners, 11 Grand Championship berths and one Tournament Grand Champion.
