Here's something to bark about: the Michigan Winter Dog Classic will once again feature more than 7,000 dogs.

Dog lovers can enjoy the only dog show in the metro-Detroit area at the Suburban Collection Showplace, 46100 Grand River Ave., in Novi January 16-19. The event, hosted by the Oakland County Kennel Club and Livonia Kennel Club, includes can’t-miss exhibits, entertainment, educational seminars.

The Michigan Winter Dog Classic has been a mainstay in Michigan since 1934 and continues to be the largest in Michigan – and now only dog show in metro-Detroit. The annual event showcases more than 7,000 dogs, more than 160 breeds, including several breeds getting ready for the country’s premier Westminster Kennel Club Dog show in February. Dogs will be judged in accordance with the American Kennel Club (AKC).

The Michigan Winter Dog Classic has something for the whole family, including many interactive features. Among the can’t-miss attractions the entire family will enjoy are:

  • Educational demonstrations
  • Breed seminars
  • Meet the Breeds which provides attendees in-ring access to many of the 160 plus breeds recognized by the AKC, the Oakland County Kennel Club and the Livonia Kennel Club and sanctioned by the American Kennel Club
  • Duck Herding Shows

'My Dog Can Do That' returns so attendees' dogs can be a part of the action

Also back by popular demand, the Michigan Winter Dog Classic will feature the AKC’s attraction, My Dog Can Do That!

This unique attraction allows owners to bring their dogs and let them try some of the fun agility events Saturday, January 18 and Sunday, January 19 at the Michigan Winter Dog Classic from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. It is free to take part and participating dogs must be at least 6 months old and have proof of rabies vaccination. No pre-registration is required.

During My Dog Can Do That!, professional trainers will show owners how to get their dog started in the exciting sport of agility, which is an obstacle course for dogs. They will help owners try beginning agility equipment with their dog – plus give them some helpful obedience tips. They will also have information on where to find professional dogtraining classes in the local communities.

In addition to having their dogs try agility, guests can test their dogs’ manners and basic obedience at the AKC Canine Good Citizen tests.

A full schedule and ticket information for the 2014 Michigan Winter DogClassic will be announced soon. The 2014 Michigan Winter Dog Classic takes place at the Suburban Collection Showplace, (461000 Grand River Avenue) in Novi.
