What is Novi's Snow Removal Policy?

For a "Level 2" snowfall, The City of Novi cleans local roads once major streets are cleared.

Novi is getting bombarded with snow this week. Are you aware of the city's snow removal policy? If you are or aren't, it's time for a refresher.

According to an update to the City of Novi's Facebook page Thursday morning, crews are to be dispatched to residential streets as soon as possible to clean up after this week's storm. To assist with subdivision street clearing, residents are asked to refrain from parking in the roadway.

The City of Novi's Department of Public Services maintains all public roads except those under the jurisdiction of the Road Commission for Oakland County (Haggerty Road, Eight Mile Road, Napier Road, Pontiac Trail and Fourteen Mile Road) and the Michigan Department of Transportation (I-96, I-696, I-275 and M-5).

  • police and fire facilities, bridges, and local/residential streets with significant hills and/or curves
  • local/residential streets, public parking lots and sidewalks abutting city-owned property
For Level 2 snowfall, which is an accumulation of 4 or more inches of snow and any accumulation of ice, city crews will continuously plow and salt major roads to keep the pavement as bare as possible. Once major roads are cleared, local roads will be plowed and salted on a continuous basis as well. Crews will continue to work on local roads once the storm has ended.

Novi also uses pre-wetted rock salt to prevent ice from forming and to melt ice if it does accumulate. Crews also spread sand on recently-paved concrete roads and on bridge decks.
