"Woman in an Armchair" is one of six paintings on display this summer in Novi this summer.

A 19th-century woman sits moodily outside this summer as shoppers dine nearby.

Woman in an Armchair by Pierre-Auguste Renoir is on display outdoors near the food court until late August.

It’s one of six pieces on display in Novi this summer as part of the Detroit Institute of Art’s Inside|Out program, which brings waterproof reproductions of masterpieces to the streets of Metro Detroit communities.

Novi Patch is featuring all six of Novi’s pieces this week.

"One of the original 'impressionists,' Renoir painted the female figure throughout his career," reads the placard next to the painting. "In this early work, he accentuates the glowing flesh of the sitter's face, upper torso, and arms by surrounding it with dark tones of the dress, hair and armchair."

The original painting is on display at the DIA, along with other Renoir paintings.

Novi was one of 11 cities in Metro Detroit chosen to display artwork. Read more about the program and see a map of the other paintings in Novi here.
