Bullying Movie With Local Ties Comes to Theaters Friday

Plymouth teen Katy Butler is credited with helping lower the rating on 'Bully', which hits Detroit area theaters Friday.

The highly anticipated and discussed movie Bully hits theaters in the Novi area today.

AMC Livonia has five showings on Friday – 11:45 a.m., 2:15 p.m., 4:45 p.m., 7:15 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. The documentary has garnered much national attention but it has a personal tie to the area.

Plymouth teen Katy Butler is credited with helping the movie get a lowered rating so that people of all ages could view it. The documentary was initially Rated "R" by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). Her efforts went viral online with the national website Change.org published a petition to change the movie's rating from "R" to "PG-13." It has since been lowered.

Butler took up the effort to change the rating because she said she was a victim of bullying after coming out as a lesbian at

“The intended audience is middle school and high school students,” Butler said, as they are the age groups often associated with bullying. “Being rated ‘R’ just takes that away from them.”
