Novi's New 'Club Pilates' Already Using Wait Lists

Pilates workouts are designed for everyone, says Club Pilates owner Kristen Cronin.

Business at Club Pilates in Novi has been booming since it opened in April and has even attracted the attention of Novi Mayor Bob Gatt.

Owner and certified pilates instructor Kristen Cronin said Gatt is visiting Club Pilates on Monday to work out for a fitness video sponsored by the city.

The fitness club is also popular among everyday residents. Cronin said there are wait lists for several classes.

"Pilates is turning into this elitist thing in a lot of areas. But it’s really not designed to be like that. It's for everyone," she said.

Club Pilates offers classes at half the cost of what the industry currently offers, she said. Club Pilates started in San Diego and Novi's location, at 39799 Grand River Ave., is the first branch in Michigan, she said.

Club Pilates uses a different method called Pilates Reformer.

"The reformer allows you to use a strength training aspect without putting strain on your body," she said.

This is why the classes, which include sessions on cardio sculpting and higher level strength training, are designed for everyone from pregnant women to athletes, she said.

"You're strengthening and lengthening the muscles without compression or damage to the body," she said.

Cronin said the commitment level depends on the individual. She said she recommends attending classes three times a week to see better results, but people can also sign up for classes daily.

Classes start at 6 a.m. every day except Tuesday, and Club Pilates extended their hours for a few days in the week to meet demand.

Club Pilates also has an in-house certification program and training facility that is approved by the certification board Pilates Method Alliance, Cronin said.

"We have three trainers right now," she said. "But as our graduates go through, they start working for us."

Since Club Pilates is new to the Novi community, those interested can sign up for their first class for $5.
