Novi's Pastry House Hippo, the only Japanese bakery in the area, features unique Asian specialities.
Linda Okamoto and her husband, Yusuke, own the store, which has been open since 1997 in the same location at 42130 Grand River Ave. She said everything in the shop is made fresh daily. It offers cookies, cakes, breads, sweet buns and pastries.
"Our European customers lover our Danishes," she said. "We get a lot of French customers."
As for the Asian specialities, Okamoto said the animal-shaped breads — turtles, crabs and cats to name a few — are some of the most popular items.
