Novi Community Remembers Chip Switzer at Candlelight Vigil

More than 200 people gathered in Novi Sunday to share their memories of Switzer, a Novi High School graduate who passed away over the weekend.

More than 200 neighbors, friends and teachers came out to the fields of Novi Woods Elementary School for a candlelight vigil Sunday to remember the life of Chip Switzer, who unexpectedly passed away over the weekend.

A 2009 Novi High School graduate, Switzer died in California while visiting family.

The vigil was quickly organized by friends Aaron Martinez, Mike Ryniak and Patrick Budesky, according to the event invitation posted on Facebook.

“I knew I wasn’t the only one who was impacted by Chip,” said Martinez. “He was always the one who was there to lend a helping hand.”

Candles were lit around 9 p.m. and an open mic policy was enacted, where many took the opportunity to share a fond memory of Switzer. A moment of silence was also shared.

A statement from Switzer's family sent to Novi Patch this afternoon reads, "At this time of incredible loss and sorrow, our family was deeply comforted by the outpouring of love at the candlelight vigil for Chip. We especially thank those who spoke and Aaron Martinez for creating such a wonderful tribute to our son and brother. We only wish we could have been with you instead of thousands of miles distant. We hope to be loyal to Chip’s memories and values. With immense gratitude, Chip’s family."

Several stories told at the vigil described Switzer as inspirational, genuine, optimistic, carrying a dry sense of humor, and as a talented musician.

Close friend Jon Bauer said he will remember Switzer's “humor and sarcastic wit.”

Novi High School Assistant Principal and Student Council Advisor Nicole Carter remembers Switzer as a “young person who could look beyond the barriers. He would go beyond the status quo.”

Switzer was president of his senior class, as well as elected homecoming king his senior year. Throughout high school he was involved in baseball, football, tennis, and the community theatre troupe “Awkward Pause.”

Friend Evan Lian performed I’m Yours by Jason Mraz as a tribute to Switzer at the vigil. He said he wants people to remember how “full of life” he was.

Switzer was studying philosophy and German at the University of Michigan and was planning to study abroad in Germany this upcoming semester.

His family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be given to St. Francis Inn, a homeless shelter where Switzer volunteered last summer.

A funeral will be held for Switzer in San Diego Aug. 20 at St. Gregory the Great, according to the Facebook page "R.I.P. Chip Switzer," which was set up by his family.
