Novi Poll Workers Make Elections a Fun Tradition

Election day is long but their friendships last longer.

The smiles and laughter of poll workers at the Novi Public library, Precinct 16's polling location, created a welcoming atmosphere Tuesday.

"It's a long day, but it's fun," said Sharon Mayhall, who has worked at the polls for five years.

Her election-day comrades agreed. Mary Bertin said many of them met through working for elections.

"I think it's important to get the citizens out to vote for all of the elections," she said.

Poll workers commit long hours to make election days successful. Mary Angela Winter, polling location chairperson, said she saw a steady turnout of voters Tuesday morning for a local election.

"We usually have a higher voter turnout in this precinct," said Michele Witter, poll worker.

It takes hours of organization for the polls to run smoothly for voters. Winter, who is in her eighth year working for the polls, said the city clerk's office is to thank for that.
