Novi's Farmer's Market Open for Business

Choua Yang stood in the cold rain last Tuesday morning with her family selling fresh produce at the Novi’s Farmer’s Market. The Michigan State freshman was optimistic that people would come out despite the rain to get fresh food.

“The best part of Novi’s market is probably the different races that are here, because they like buying our produce because it’s different than what you can get in stores like Meijer or Kroger or grocery stores compared to our farmer’s markets,” said Yang.

The Yang family, when coming to Novi, has a wide variety of food for a wide variety of tastes. They have various vegetables from broccoli to Shanghai bok-choy to cater to the different palates of their customers. They travel from Emmett, Michigan, which is just outside of Port Huron, in order to sell their goods.

Other, more local farmers also say that they enjoy coming to the Farmer’s market. Martha and Bruce, of South Lyon, just began attending the Novi’s Farmer’s Market this year. They said that they enjoy the atmosphere, and the kid’s activities at Fuerst Park that bring in more crowds to the market.

“The kid’s programs the same day attracts a lot of people to the park, and then they stop by and see us,” said Martha, who is also a baker in Novi.

The Farmer’s Market, which runs every Tuesday morning from nine to one, shares Fuerst Park every week with Novi’s Tremendous Tuesday’s, which features a variety of shows and activities for children to participate in.

In previous years, the Market was held on Saturdays, with the move to Tuesday being new this year.

“I don’t really like the move to Tuesday, just because Saturday is when people are free, and go around to go shopping more,” said Yang. “But I guess we’ll see what happens.”
