Novi Lawyer Achieves Supreme Court Bar Admission

Darryl Segars is now part of an elite group of lawyers permitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Darryl Segars is a lawyer practicing commercial and civil litigation, representing people and institutions affiliated with the health care industry. This spring he received the high honor of being admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court.

After an application and sponsorship process, Segars was admitted to the Supreme Court Bar in a ceremony with all nine justices on April 4. He lives in Novi with his wife, Angela, and daughters, Raquel,7, and Sophia,3.

Novi Patch: You just received Supreme Court recognition. Can you tell me a bit about exactly what that means?

Darryl Segars: The purpose of being admitted to the Supreme Court Bar is so that you are able to practice before the Supreme Court. Not every lawyer who has a license to practice law has the ability to practice before the United States Supreme Court – only those people who seek and gain admission…I have several cases that are currently pending in the United States District Court and I believe one is in the Circuit Court of Appeals, and those cases may one day make it to the United States Supreme Court, and if they do, I would be eligible to actually practice before the court.

Novi Patch: What does this accomplishment mean to you?

Segars: I was very excited. I was more moved than I initially anticipated. It was quite an awesome experience to have all of the judges come out from their chambers into the court at the same time to swear me into the court. Afterwards I had the opportunity to meet both justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Samuel Alito, and that was a very moving experience as well.

Novi Patch: What did your family and friends think?

Segars: They were very excited for me. We had a small celebration…For me it’s just part of what I do, so I didn’t think a whole lot of it – although I was very excited to be admitted – but my family and friends appear to be more happy than I was. For me, it’s party of what I do. I don’t do it for pomp and circumstance or recognition – it’s just part of my job. But they were appropriately happy for me. It kind of made me proud to be a member of the Supreme Court Bar.

Novi Patch: Do you have any advice you would share with other attorneys or law students for accomplishing their goals?

Segars: I would say just never give up. Just try your hardest. Always keep in mind what we as lawyers are always about is justice and fairness, and I think those principles should guide you professionally and personally. I think that’s what makes our profession one of the more – if not most – honorable professions.

Novi Patch: What do you like best about living in Novi?

Segars: It’s just a beautiful community. My neighbors are just some of the most wholesome and friendly people you ever want to meet…We have the benefit of having a nice, quiet bedroom community, but at the same time, you know, just being minutes from a lot of things that are happening – be it nightlife or shopping. We just really enjoy the area.
