Former State House Speaker Craig DeRoche Sues City of Novi, Police Department

According to reports, Craig Deroche is suing Novi and its police department over an arrest at his home in 2010.

Former Michigan House Speaker Craig DeRoche is suing Novi and the Novi Police department, stating officers violated several of his constitutional rights when they arrested him at his home in 2010 following a disturbance, according to the Detroit News.

An article in the Detroit News states that in January, the Michigan Court of Appeals upheld a court decisions dismissing the charges Novi police brought against DeRoche.

According to an article on MLive, DeRoche was arrested in June 2010 at his home in Novi after a family member called police and said DeRoche was drunk and carrying a gun. 

DeRoche was charged with possessing a firearm while intoxicated, as a result.

Those charges were eventually dropped based on DeRoche's Second Amendment rights, according to the Detroit Free Press.

He is now suing Novi for for unspecified damages, stating police unlawfully entered and searched his home without a warrant, confiscated his guns and arrested him in front of his children, the Detroit News states. The lawsuit was filed in Detroit's U.S. District Court, and he has requested a jury trial.
