Novi Police Investigating Violence at Twelve Oaks Mall

Shots were fired in the air at Novi's Pavillion Court Apartments, and the fight continued at Twelve Oaks.

The is continuing to investigate two apparently related incidents of violence Saturday, in which shots were fired into the air at Pavilion Court Apartments and a gun was pulled out in Twelve Oaks Mall.

Saturday around 3 p.m., the Novi Police were dispatched to Grove Court at at Nine Mile and Haggerty roads on reports that shots were being fired, said Novi Deputy Police Chief Tom Lindberg.

“By the time we got there, the suspects had kind of fled the scene in a blue Toyota. Witnesses told us that there was a fight between four or five people in the parking lot, and as the fight broke up, one of the suspects reportedly pulled out a handgun and fired some shots into the air,” Lindberg said.

The police found some shell casing from a 9mm handgun and took down witness statements from the scene.

A couple of hours later, the police received several 911 calls from the upper level of inside . Callers said that the suspect had pulled a handgun from his hip, but there were no shots fired at the mall, Lindberg said.

The mall incident involved another dispute between eight people. Two of the suspects left in a dark-colored Impala, and two left in the same blue Toyota. Four of the other subjects were pulled over on Ring Road.

The male that had pulled the gun out in the mall was taken into custody, Lindberg said.

Witnesses from the mall came back to the Novi police station to give statements.

The Novi Police told other cities to be on the lookout for the other suspects, and around 9 p.m., two of the male suspects were located in Inkster and were taken into custody. They were later turned over to the Novi police.

A helicopter from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department was seen flying overhead during the time in between the two incidents, but the Novi police did not call them out, Lindberg said. He said the Sheriff’s Department has a helicopter that monitors any radio traffic from police departments, and they flew to the area in case the Novi police needed any assistance.

The police are continuing to investigate the two incidents.
