Police Warn Residents of Daytime Home Invasions when Residents are Away

The suspects are reportedly knocking on doors to see if someone is home. If there's an answer, they make up an unusual name, then explain they have the wrong address. If no one answers, they break in and ransack the apartment.

Novi officials are warning residents that over the past five days, seven apartments throughout the city have been forcibly entered, or attempted to be entered, during the daytime hours.

The suspects are ransacking the apartments looking for valuables or money, police said in a news release.

Multiple witnesses describe the suspects as being younger looking black males who are knocking on apartment doors to see if anyone is home. If a resident answers the door, the suspects make up an unusual name and ask if that person is home.

If no one answers the door, the suspects force entry.

Unfortunately, several citizens have witnessed suspicious activity leading up to the breaking and entering but dismissed the actions and failed to alert police, authorities said.
