Several People Arrested in Shoplifting Incidents Last Weekend

The following information was provided by the Novi Police Department.

Several people were reported for shoplifting in Novi during the weekend of Dec. 14-16, according to Novi police reports.

A 65-year-old woman was arrested at Kohl's at 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 14 on charges of stealing $67 worth of face cream, according to a crime report. The loss prevention officer saw her select two bottles of cream and put them in the bottom of her cart, placing her purse on top, the report said. The woman later paid for several items at the register but did not remove the cream from under her purse, the report said. The loss prevention officer watched her as she went to her car; she then moved her purse and put the cream inside of her Kohl's shopping bag, the report said. The loss prevention officer then asked her to come back to the office, and she fainted, the report said. CEMS were called. The woman said she forgot to pay for the cream, and when she saw it in her cart, she decided to put it in her bag even though she knew it was wrong and that she should have returned to pay for it, the report said.

An 18-year-old male was arrested at JC Penney at 6 p.m. on Dec. 14 on charges of stealing a $22 ring, according to a crime report. The loss prevention officer at the store saw the man remove the ring from the box, put it in his pant pocket, and leave the store without paying for it, the report said.

A woman was arrested at Sears at 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 15 on charges of stealing seven fragrances, worth a total of $154, according to a police report. The loss prevention watched the woman via surveillance and saw her select the seven fragrances very quickly and place them in her cart, the report said. The woman left the store without paying for them, the report said.

Another woman was arrested at Sears at 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 15 on charges of stealing $118 in clothes, according to a police report. An employee saw the woman select some clothing and go into the fitting room; she exited later with only a few pieces of merchandise, but with a bulging shopping bag, the report said. The woman then left without paying and was arrested. Police also found a small amount of marijuana on her, so she was also charged with possession, the report said.

A woman was arrested at Macy's at 2 p.m. on Dec. 15 on charges of stealing $87 in clothing, according to a police report. A woman with her was arrested on charges of stealing $305 in wallets, the report said. The first woman selected clothing and went into the fitting room; when she left, there were hangers left behind but no clothes, the report said. Police found her wearing the two tops under her clothing, the report said. The other woman was seen putting the wallets into her Macy's shopping bag, which contained some items she had already purchased, the report said.

A man was arrested at JC Penney at 5 p.m. on Dec. 16 on charges of stealing $57 in clothing, according to a police report. The man was seen taking clothes into a fitting room, where he ripped off the tags, the report said. The man then left the store without paying, the report said.
