Teens Involved in I-94 Crash; One Dead, One Critically Injured

A 19-year-old driver died after an accident in Chesterfield Township just after midnight, police said Monday.

A 19-year-old St. Clair Shores driver died and her passenger was critically injured very early Monday in an accident on Interstate 94 near 23 Mile in Chesterfield Township, police said.

The passenger is a 19-year-old man from Algonac. Their identities were not immediately released.

Their car was struck while sitting disabled in the eastbound lanes of I-94 after crashing into a guard rail a short time earlier.

According to Chesterfield police, at about 12:20 a.m. Monday the 19-year-old woman's vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when she lost control and crashed into the guard rail.

The then-disabled vehicle sat in the eastbound lanes of the expressway, police said. A 27-year-old Chesterfield driver, who was unaware of the accident moments before, crashed into the vehicle. The Chesterfield driver and his 26-year-old female passenger from Macomb Township suffered minor injuries, according to a news release from Chesterfield Township Detective Sgt. Deron Myers.

The investigation is ongoing as police say speed and alcohol are factors under consideration at this time.

My family and I were about a minute behind this accident, we still had an hour drive home and prayed for them the entire way. I can not get the vision of the young man out of my head. May these families find the strength to get through this.

It's a question I have too, but we may never know and besides that, does it really matter? It won't change anything. What is done, is done...

We went to the funeral home this evening to see Rebecca. We never knew her as she was, so the hundreds of photographs showing her living helped us identify with her and her loved ones. To see the incredible amount of people, flowers and grief in the room, we knew that Rebecca was a very special young lady to so many people. Beside the obvious, my only wish is that I would have been fortunate enough to have known her and her family far sooner. May God bless her, her family & friends. We will never forget you Rebecca, Bob and Donna
