Fox Run Retirement Community Approved for Liquor License

Residents of of Novi will now be able to enjoy spirits in the dining area after the Novi City Council approved the community’s request for a liquor license at its meeting Monday night.

Fox Run was granted a Continuing Care Retirement Center License, which is a new type of license created for residential communities that provide full-time residential housing predominantly for individuals older than 62, just like Fox Run.

Fox Run previously applied and was granted a Class C liquor license in 2009, but after evaluating its needs Fox Run executives later decided to discontinue its application in 2010. The community's executives decided to reapply this past year for the new type of license. 

The Novi City Council also agreed to waive the $1,000 application fee since Fox Run paid for it in 2009.  Novi City Manager Clay Pearson said some reviews were done again in 2011, but the majority of the application work was done by the city back in 2009. He also said Fox Run’s request is a unique case because it is a new type of license.

The Continuing Care Retirement Center License does not count toward the city’s quota for liquor licenses.

Name to be picked for The Landings parkland by March

The Novi City Council gave the city staff the go-ahead to begin a contest to find an official name for .

The property, located in the north part of Novi near Walled Lake, was acquired by the city in the 1980s and was designated as parkland in March 2010.

The city plans to begin developing the 11-acre property with walking trails, a playground and access to the water this year. At , the council agreed that it was time to find an official name for the park.

The name "The Landings" comes from a proposed development that was once planned to go on the site.

The city will ask for nominations for names based on the following criteria:

• Neighborhood or geographical identification
• Natural or geological feature
• Historical or cultural significance
• No site shall be given the same name as an existing public facility or school site

Due to a policy by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the park will not be named after an individual.

Suggestions will be taken until Feb. 13, after which a committee of three members of the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Commission, two members of the Historical Commission and two youth from the surrounding neighborhood will select the final name. The name will be given to the Novi City Council to approve at its March 12 meeting.
