Kathy Crawford (R-Novi) officially filed as a candidate for state representative for the 38th District last week.

The current representative is Crawford's husband, Republican Hugh Crawford, who will be term-limited this year.

“As a state representative, I will bring my years of experience and proven leadership in community activities, as well as city and county government,” Kathy Crawford said from the clerk’s department at the Oakland County government offices in Pontiac. “I also pledge to continue Hugh’s great record by ensuring that everyone’s tax dollars are spent wisely in education, economic development, transportation infrastructure and health-related services.”

Voters in the state’s 38th District will elect a new representative at the Nov. 4 general election. The district includes Novi, Novi Township, South Lyon, Lyon Township, Walled Lake and part of Northville.

Both Crawford and her husband are life-long Novi residents, who have devoted their time and energy to public service. After more than 30 years of government service in the Field of Aging for both Oakland County and the City of Novi, Crawford was overwhelmingly elected to Novi City Council in 2007. After serving three years, she easily won election in 2010 and re-election in 2012 as a Republican voice in her current position on the Oakland County Board of Commissioners for the 9th District.

“I am proud of my record as an advocate and leader on both the local and county levels, as well as on the State and National levels," Crawford said. “I have a proven track record for responsiveness and resourcefulness. My ideas work. I understand the government process, and I know how to get things done for my constituents. I am confident that I will make a difference in Lansing."

Crawford actively serves on numerous committees as an Oakland County Commissioner. They include:

  • Vice-Chairperson, General Government Committee
  • Vice Chairperson, Ad-Hoc Webcasting Committee
  • Appointed by the Oakland County Chair to the Oakland County Retirees Compensation
  • Oakland County Senior Advisory Committee
  • Finance Committee
  • Legislative Committee
  • Drug Card Committee
  • Area Agency on Aging 1B
  • OLHSA Board and Executive Board Member
  • Oak 65-Senior Citizen Issues
  • Planning & Building (Former Member)

Besides her duties as a County Commissioner, she remains actively involved in many civic and non-profit activities, such as serving as the chair of the Novi Historical Commission, past secretary and active member of the Novi Oaks American Business Women’s Association, member of the Novi Pavilion Shore Park Foundation, member of the Friends of the Novi Library, as well as a Novi Library volunteer, member of the Michigan State Fair Steering Committee and performing member of the Novi Senior Theatre group.

Crawford also has earned and received numerous state and local awards for her community service and innovative program ideas. Some include the prestigious Novi Rotary Paul Harris Fellow Award, Business and Professional Woman of the Year and the State Innovative Programming Award through Michigan Parks and Recreation. She also is an Honorary Lifetime member of the Optimist International Club,
where she earned the Honor Club Citation Award. Over the years, she has received Novi’s “Outstanding Citizen Award” and Novi’s “Distinguished Service Award.”
