Novi Continues To Score Above State Average on MEAP

The 2011 MEAP results were released Wednesday, using a new scoring system.

The 2011 MEAP scores show that Novi continues to score above average compared to the rest of the state.

“The basic trajectory that we’ve been on, our ranking in the county, our ranking in the state, those things haven’t really changed based on what we’re looking at,” Novi Director of Student Growth and Accountability Nick Kalakailo said.

Yet, the numbers will look different this year to parents and educators. Major changes were made to the way MEAP scores are calculated.

The test itself did not change, but the way the scores were calculated did. This year, the MEAP used different cut scores.

The cut scores – the passing scores that distinguish between whether a student is advanced, proficient, partially proficient or not proficient in certain subjects — were adopted by the State Board of Education in September 2010. With the more rigorous cut scores, students must get roughly 65 percent of the answers correct to “pass” the state test, instead of only 39 percent, which was the previous benchmark.

“The career- and college-ready MEAP cut scores better reflect how well schools are preparing students for success at the next grade level and whether all Michigan students are progressing at a level sufficient for them to be career- and college ready when they complete their high school education,” said a statement from the Michigan Department of Education.

The state also went back and adjusted past years' data to reflect the new scoring system, except for writing, so students do not see huge drops in their scores from 2010.

“What would be upsetting though is if parents somehow feel that their kids have slipped in a year, or that perhaps their kids aren’t doing as well as they once were, when really they’re the same boys and girls that were with us last year,” said Assistant Superintendent for Academic Services RJ Webber.

Kalakailo said the new system is not something that one can easily look at and understand. He and the other administrators are continuing to analyze the numbers.

“It’s just different now, and we’re trying to understand what that difference means,” Kalakailo said.

Superintendent Dr. Steve Matthews said that although these numbers might look different to parents, he would hope that the parent to judge how their child is doing.

“When these results go home to parents, my hope would be the parent talk to the teacher and say, ‘How does this fit in with what you’re seeing in the classroom? Does this fairly represent my child or is this an anomaly?’ And my belief is the teacher will be able to say ‘This is a good gauge of your student’ or ‘This is what I’m seeing in the class that I think they perform better,’ or perhaps the test gives a false positive of the student,” Matthews said.
