Novi School Board Expands Breakfast Program, Agrees to Lease with Japanese School of Detroit

The Novi Community School District will expand the breakfast program to Deerfield, Novi Woods and Parkview elementary schools this fall.

The will be offering breakfast at all of its schools this fall.

The Novi Board of Education voted unanimously at its meeting Thursday to continue the school breakfast program at , , , and for the 2011-2012 school year. The board also agreed to begin a pilot breakfast program in the remaining schools—, and . The board expects to receive an update on the breakfast program, including costs and participation, at one of its November meetings and will decide whether to continue the pilot program at that time.

Under the program, students who are financially eligible for free lunch are offered a free breakfast; students eligible for a reduced lunch can get breakfast for 30 cents; and students who are ineligible for free lunch can purchase breakfast for $1.50.

In the elementary schools, breakfast is offered during snack time.

Assistant Superintendent of Business and Operations Steven Barr said the program should not cost the district any money and only requires about 15-20 minutes of work from a food service employee.

Lease approved with Japanese School of Detroit

The board unanimously approved a lease agreement with Detroit Ringo Kai, also known as the Japanese School of Detroit. The school will be moving from its previous location in Birmingham and plans to use 40 classrooms, two gymnasiums, two cafeterias, a music room and a conference room in Novi Meadows on Saturdays starting Aug. 27. Ringo Kai will also occupy seven classrooms daily from Tuesday to Saturday in the Instructional Technology Center building, primarily for office space. 

Under the lease, Ringo Kai will pay $17,093 per month for the use and maintenance of the facility until 2015, at which time the lease amount will increase to $17,596 per month. The lease amount will again increase in 2019 to $18,124 per month until it ends in 2021. The rental charge will be adjusted from time to time based on the number of classrooms used.

Other board items

The board also voted to cast its ballot for Don Hubler as its regional representation on the Michigan Association of School Boards. The elected candidate will run for a three-year term. The other two candidates are Robert McLachlan and Darlene L. Pomponio.

The board also voted to accept the resignation of Jon Thomann, a Novi High School vocal music teacher. He is leaving to take the position of associate band director at Plymouth-Canton schools.
