Two Novi Wildcats Win Pompon Scholarships

Mackenzie Kelley and Ashley Wojtylo were among six seniors who won scholarships from Mid American Pompon this year.

Mackenzie Kelley and Ashley Wojtylo, seniors at , were each awarded a $500 college scholarship from Mid American Pompon this past month.

Mid American Pompon, Michigan’s leader in pompon competitions, summer camps and training for pompon teams in middle school through the collegiate level, awarded $3,000 worth of scholarships to six high school seniors from throughout Michigan. Each student will be presented with a $500 check made payable to the college or university that they will attend. The organization has donated more than $60,000 worth of scholarships over the last 24 years.

Other recipients include Samantha Olvera and Danielle Unrein from Swan Valley High School; Lauren Schafer from Freeland High School and Alyssa Kraycsir from Bay City John Glenn High School.

To be eligible for the scholarship, students had to meet the following criteria:

  • Is a graduating senior with a 3.2 or above GPA
  • Has attended two or more Mid American Pompon events as a participant or competitor
  • Composed an essay in an anonymous format which described how pompon has enriched their life and how they have contributed to the sport
  • Submitted a letter of recommendation from a coach

A scholarship committee, comprised of a Mid American Pompon coach advisory board, selected the finalists. The awards were presented at the Mid American Pompon State Championship at Eastern Michigan University on Feb. 12.

“We created the scholarship fund to give deserving graduates financial assistance to help make the transition to college a little more comfortable,” said Julie Hobbs Julian, director of pompon, in a press release. “The girls are chosen based on their academic and leadership abilities in addition to their dedication to the sport of pompon.”
