City Takes Over Novi Farmers Market

The City of Novi took over the Farmers Market this year. It was previously run by the Chamber of Commerce.

With summer underway, Novi has started holding its farmers market once a week at Fuerst Park.

Located at the corner of Ten Mile and Taft next to the Novi Library, the Novi Farmers Market takes place on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 18 through Aug. 27, and 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Sept. 3 to 24.

Although the Novi Chamber of Commerce was once in charge of this event, this is the first year that the City of Novi is offering the market.

Wendy DuVall, the recreation supervisor, said, “It was a mutual agreement that the City would take it over because it takes place in our park. It was changed to Tuesday to coincide with our Sizzling Summer Art Series.”

While more vendors join each week, eight vendors currently sell a wide variety of products at the market, serving residents from Novi and surrounding areas, as well as staff from local businesses.

“Maple syrup, honey, barbecue sauces, pie, jams, jellies, pasta, spice, tea, olive oil, pasties, gluten free cakes, and soon produce,” DuVall said, when she listed some of the products sold at the market.

Owner Sandi Liang of Laurel Park’s The Olive Store, who has been a vendor at the market for two years, said, “We sell premium extra olive oil from around the world, certified Italian balsamic vinegar, all natural hand-blended spices, and gourmet foods.  We also carry olive oil-based natural and organic bath and body products.”

In order to encourage economic growth and state pride, the market is only open to Michigan producers, and all produce sold must be grown within the state.

“This gives local farmers the chance to sell fresh nutritious food directly to local customers, creates new farms and food businesses, provides ways to create excitement and activity in our parks, and gives us an opportunity to witness what goes into producing our food supply,” DuVall said.

Sandi believes the buying and selling of Michigan products is essential for local economic growth, while creating more opportunities for Michiganders and encouraging new entrepreneurs, she said.

Liang said, “Farmers markets are important because they support local businesses, along with fresher fruits and veggies.  You can get all of your grocery needs pretty much in one spot, while enjoying a great outdoor experience.  That is what makes summer here in Novi so much fun.”
