Tell us about a teacher who made a difference in your life in honor of Teacher Appreciation Week.
May 7-11 is National Teacher Appreciation Week. So we want to know, which teacher deserves some recognition? Maybe it's a teacher from a school in the area — Novi, Northville, Walled Lake or Catholic Central — or a teacher you have had in the past. On Novi Patch's Facebook Page, a few readers shared who they appreciate. Walled Lake Western student Torry Yu wrote, "I have too many to name. Ms. Burrill (5th grade) at Hickory Woods Elementary! I had her as my science teacher and loved the way she taught and how she added humor into her lessons. She showed her knowledge in the lesson. I hope my sister has her next year for 2nd grade." While Novi parent Kristen Taube Prieur wrote, "Ms. Vanston at Parkview Elementary!! She is my daughters …

At Wayne State University in Farmington Hills, U.S. Rep. Gary Peters gathers advocates to urge support for legislation that will prevent Stafford loan rates from doubling.
If federally subsidized Stafford student loan rates double this year, thousands of dollars in additional interest may hit Walsh College student MiVida Burrus' family doubly hard. During a news conference Tuesday at Wayne State University Oakland Center in Farmington Hills, the Troy mother of three said her daughter has chosen to follow her example of seeking higher education. Both rely on Stafford loans to cover the cost of tuition. "Raising the interest rate hurts me, and it hurts my family," Burrus said. "It kind of dampens our dreams and keeps us from believing that we can ever reach the goal that we set out, which is to have that degree, to have that job and be a productive society member." The family is, by no means, alone. …

Changes will take place during the 2014-2015 school year.
Paper and pencil for statewide tests will soon be a thing of the past for Michigan students as they prepare to take a new online assessment detailed during a roundtable Monday by the Michigan Department of Education. The exam will replace the standardized MEAP and MME assessments in math, reading and writing, beginning during the 2014-2015 school year. The MEAP and MME assessments will still be given in science and social studies. But unlike the tests students are used to, the new statewide exam will not have a common set of questions. Subsequent questions will be determined based on how a student answers the previous one. A correct answer yields a harder one. An incorrect responce yields an easier question. The goal is to have students …
The first grade teacher was surprised with the award on Monday.
Kerry Kowalczyk, first grade teacher at Parkview Elementary School, has built a great reputation for connecting with her students through interactive, hands-on approaches to learning. The parents love it, her students love it and the Novi Community School District loves it. That’s why Kowalczyk was named 2012 Novi Teacher of the Year. District officials and supporters surprised her with the presentation of the title in her classroom Monday afternoon. “Kerry exemplifies the word 'leadership,' said Superintendent Dr. Steve Matthews. “She is a leader amongst her peers. She tries a new idea, tweaks it if necessary, and then shares it with her teammates, her building and the district.” Kowalczyk is a graduate of Central Michigan University, …

The new online assessment will replace the MEAP and MME tests in math, reading and writing beginning during the 2014-15 school year.
Beginning in the 2014-15 school year, students throughout Michigan will be given an online exam to test their knowledge of core subjects. The test replaces the Michigan Merit Exam (MME) and the Michigan Educational Assessment Progam (MEAP) in all subjects except social science and science. Called Smarter Balanced, the exam was produced by The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium, a state-led effort to provide consistent and comparable standards, aligned to the Common Core State Standards, in English language arts, literacy and mathematics. Smarter Balanced recently released a Technology Readiness Tool for districts to measure readiness to move to an online assessment program. Martineau said only about 6 percent of districts have taken …

Unfortunate I know students who are now working and looking for every way they can to defer their loans-they don't have initiative -they complain about their lot in life but they have plenty of money for tech gadgets, tons of time for near constant texting, money for beer and "hanging out" with their little group--so they find another window-employers that will reimburse tuition for post grad -so…   more ›
