With broad-based support and a new title sponsor, last year's Great Lakes State Fair is being transformed this year in to the Fifth Third Michigan State Fair. At a Monday press conference held in a cavernous Suburban Collection Showplace hall, a contigent of bagpipers, clowns and cyclists representing Detroit Shriners ushered in a new era for the fair, which launched at the conference and event center in 2012 to fill the void created by the closing of the Michigan State Fair in 2009. The Great Lakes State Fair said thank you to the city by giving money for the development of Pavilion Shore Park and the David Barr Art Park.
More than 55,000 people attended the Great Lakes State Fair at its new home in Novi during Labor Day weekend, and the organizers are grateful to everyone who helped make the idea a reality. The organizers of the fair formally thanked the City of Novi staff for their support and help with the event by presenting the Novi City Council with a certificate of appreciation at its meeting Monday night. More than 50,000 people passed through the gates at the Suburban Collection Showcase for the Great Lakes State Fair during Labor Day weekend, according to Kent Roberts, vice chairman of the Great Lakes State Fair Board. The revived Michigan State Fair was reinstated after a three-year abscence and included livestock, agriculture, crafts, music, rides, games, Michigan-made food and beverages, contests, and the Shrine Circus. The new Novi event brought in 20,000 people on Saturday and Sunday alone.
Great Lakes State Fair board vice president Kent Roberts was a pretty happy guy Monday afternoon. As one of the partners who went "out on a ventured limb" to bring a "21st century version" of the Michigan state fair to the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, Roberts said organizers are "extremely pleased with what's happened in the last four days." He said while Friday's heat kept attendance down, around 20,000 people showed up over the next two days, which "far exceeded our hopes and wishes for our first year." People from all over the area enjoy the Great Lakes State Fair in Novi this Labor Day weekend.
Today is the second day of the Great Lakes State Fair at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi and people from all over the region arrived to enjoy it. Livonia resident Linda Reamy said, "We went to the State Fair every year until they closed it down a few years ago. We've been missing it! When we heard it was back...well, here we are!" The Great Lakes State Fair had inaugural showing at Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi from Aug. 31-Sept. 3. Michigan had the very first state fair in the nation in 1849, but there hasn't been a fair here since 2009, when it was last held in Detroit. The Board approved a resolution to show its support of the Great Lakes State Fair.
The Oakland County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution Thursday to welcome the Great Lakes State Fair and support the leaders, partners and sponsors of the new state fair. The fair will be hosted at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi this weekend, Friday, Aug. 31-Sept. 3, 2012. Organizers of the Great Lakes State Fair announced Monday that extra precautions are being taken to ensure the health and safety of the animals and attendees at the revived Michigan state fair.
