With broad-based support and a new title sponsor, last year's Great Lakes State Fair is being transformed this year in to the Fifth Third Michigan State Fair. At a Monday press conference held in a cavernous Suburban Collection Showplace hall, a contigent of bagpipers, clowns and cyclists representing Detroit Shriners ushered in a new era for the fair, which launched at the conference and event center in 2012 to fill the void created by the closing of the Michigan State Fair in 2009. The Great Lakes State Fair had inaugural showing at Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi from Aug. 31-Sept. 3. Michigan had the very first state fair in the nation in 1849, but there hasn't been a fair here since 2009, when it was last held in Detroit. In addition to traditional state fair activities, such as competitions for best animals, vegetables and canned goods, the fair includes performances by the Shrine Circus and several local bands, a midway with carnival rides, games of chance and fair treats like elephant ears, corn dogs and cotton candy and a shopping area with products from Michigan-based vendors. Here's the list of musicians playing at the revamped Michigan State Fair in Novi this Labor Day weekend.
The Great Lakes State Fair is almost here, and the list of entertainers for each day of the fair has been announced on the event's official website. Evening headline acts are Annabelle Road, Jill Jack and David Shelby, who will each play from 7-11 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, respectively. On Sunday, the entertainment stage will host Studio B's Gospel Festival. The daytime entertainment schedule is below. The fair runs from Aug. 31-Sept. 3 at Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi. More details have been revealed about the new Michigan State Fair at Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi this Labor Day weekend.
Plans for Great Lakes State Fair coming to Novi this summer are moving forward with steam. Blair Bowman, owner of Suburban Collection Showplace, has been working with the Great Lakes Agricultural Fair board, a 501(c)3 organization, to bring the Michigan State Fair back this summer at his venue. He and several of the organizers gave more details about the event at a press conference Wednesday morning, including ticket prices, parking and the events schedule. The event has also nabbed a Pure Michigan designation, meaning the state will help market the fair — although it currently is not providing any financial support. Michiganders took to Facebook, Twitter and Patch to share their thoughts on the Michigan State Fair being revamped in Novi this Labor Day weekend.
Blair Bowman, owner of Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, is working with the Great Lakes Agricultural Fair nonprofit group to bring back the Michigan State Fair this summer. The plan is to have the fair, renamed the Great Lakes State Fair, at the 32,000 square-foot Showplace. Animals and Michigan products will be held indoors, while the circus and carnival rides will be in the parking lot. The Michigan State Fair was shut down in 2009 after the government pulled its funding. The new fair will be a privately funded event.

The Great Lakes State Fair is in the works for Labor Day weekend at Suburban Collection Showplace.
After a three-year hiatus, a plan is underway to bring the Michigan State Fair back this summer. The revamped fair would be called the Great Lakes State Fair and would be held at Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi on Labor Day weekend. Blair Bowman, owner of the Showplace, announced the plans to revive the fair at the Novi City Council meeting Monday night. He said the proposed fair has been well received, and he wanted to formally let the city know of the plans. "Michigan is the second largest agricultural producer in the nation, and we should have a state fair," Bowman said. I am so excited that the fair is coming back!! My family and I went last year, bought our tickets in advance for $20 per person and we had the best time ever.
