The Novi Community Schools board of education accepted Kim Warren's resignation as principal of Novi's Deerfield Elementary at a meeting Thursday night, according to Superintendent Steve M. Matthews. Warren, 44, of Brighton, was arrested in April under the suspicion of being intoxicated on school grounds and was charged with “super-drunk” charges. She was using her sick days to be on paid leave, Matthews said. Warren's resignation was listed under personnel recommendations on the board's agenda for Thursday's meeting. "The board will not vote on it separately. It will be a part of the personnel report," he said. Panelists at Novi's education forum discuss how Michigan's public schools should be funded.
Despite the lower attendance at the education forum at Novi Middle School Monday, the panelists -- teachers, administrators and politicians -- had much to discuss including public finance of education. “Our funding structure and our school structure are not congruent,” said Casandra E. Ulbrich, vice president of the state board of education, D-Rochester Hills. Proposal A was a running theme throughout the forum. Proposal A education funding and property tax reforms, approved by Michigan voters in 1994, were meant to fund local schools. However, Proposal A restricts the number of new millage for operations that districts can ask voters to approve. Also, schools must ask all voters in the intermediate school district in which they are …
Panelists talked about teacher evaluations and its effect on teacher recruitment at Novi's education forum.
Teachers, administrators and politicians came together at an education forum at Novi Middle School Monday, held by the Novi Education Association, to discuss Michigan's responsibility toward educating its population. Panelists spent part of the evening talking about teacher evaluations. "For one thing, we have to stop bashing teachers,” said Kathleen Straus, D-Detroit, of the state board of education. Teacher evaluations are not meant to destroy them but are meant to help them do their jobs better, she said. A teacher from the audience told the panelists that he was concerned about his performance being based off of his students' tests because of a new evaluation starting next year where 25 percent of a teacher's performance is based on …

Teachers, administrators and politicians gathered in Novi to discuss Michigan's responsibility toward educating its population.
Cuts to education funding in Michigan are a big concern for educators and parents of children in public schools. “We’re diverting a whole bunch of money from our public schools and I think it’s terrible,” said Michigan Sen. Hoon-Yung Hopgood, D-Taylor, at an education forum at Novi Middle School Monday night. Teachers, administrators and politicians came together at the forum to answer the question of what Michigan's responsibility is toward educating its population. “All of our schools are being required to do more with less,” said Sheila Paton, treasurer of the Plymouth-Canton Community school board. Panelists spent the first part of the evening discussing student performance. Bill Rustem, Governor Rick Snyder's director of strategy, …

Before eliminating the program, the district is asking any parent of an incoming kindergarten student who is interested to let the district know.
Interest for the Novi Community Schools district's half-day kindergarten program is low this year. However, before eliminating the program, the district is asking any parent of an incoming kindergarten student who is interested to let the district know. The half-day kindergarten program would be at Deerfield or Orchard Hills elementary schools for the 2013-2014 school year. Transportation is not provided for students. Although, if a kindergarten student lives in the attendance area for whichever school hosts the program, that student could ride the bus in the morning but would need to be picked up after the program. The district has not yet selected a teacher for this program. Jodi Balconi, the former teacher, will not be continuing with …

Kim Warren, principal of Novi's Deerfield Elementary, was arrested on April 8 on charges of being intoxicated on school grounds.
The Novi Community Schools board of education will likely decide the future of Kim Warren's employment status with the district at its May 16 meeting, said Novi schools Superintendent Steve M. Matthews. Warren, the Deerfield Elementary School principal who was arrested under the suspicion of being intoxicated on school grounds, is currently using her sick days to be on paid leave, he said. He said the board will make its decision soon, probably at its May 16 meeting. Warren, 44, of Brighton was suspended from her position after being arrested by Novi…

Teacher Matt Burry is interim principal at Meadows while Principal Lisa Finchel is at Deerfield after Principal Kim Warren's arrest.
An interim principal has been named at Novi Meadows Elementary School as its sixth-grade principal was moved to Deerfield Elementary in the wake of Deerfield Principal Kim Warren's arrest. Warren was taken into custody Monday after police found her in her car on school grounds and suspected her of being intoxicated. Warren was put on administrative leave, and Novi Meadows sixth grade Principal Lisa Finchel was moved to Deerfield to serve in the interim. "An unintended consequence of that has been that I needed to move a strong, capable, steady administrator to Deerfield to provide leadership. I chose to assign Lisa Fenchel there temporarily as Interim Principal because of her skill and talent," said Superintendent Dr. Steve Matthews in a …
