An eight-run sixth inning helps West team to take bragging rights in the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association All-Star game for a second straight year Tuesday night.
DETROIT – The West All-Stars earned bragging rights over the East at the annual Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association (MHSBCA) All-Star game for a second year in a row at Comerica Park on Tuesday night. The West erased an early 4-2 deficit with five runs in the third inning and then blew the game open with an eight-run sixth. The West side batted around the order in the inning to take a commanding 16-6 lead. Senior Jimi Keller falls in consolation finals on Saturday, finishes in eighth place at The Palace of Auburn Hills.
AUBURN HILLS – Novi had a pair of senior wrestlers compete at the MHSAA individual state wrestling finals over the weekend. In the 285-pound weight class, senior Jimi Keller placed in the top eight. He wrestled in the seventh-place consolation finals match against Detroit Catholic Central junior Bob Coe. Coe won on a 5-2 decision. Keller finishes his career 39-15 and earned all-state honors. Keller bounced back after losing his opening match 3-1 to Cory Arnouts of Grand Ledge. Keller wasn't able to get Arnouts off his feet. Arnouts scored an early takedown and that was enough to ride out the win. In the consolation bracket, Keller won two matches. He pinned Fraser’s Mike Fruelhich in the second round. Calderon wins state title on Saturday night in the 152-pound weight class by beating Detroit Catholic Central's Alec Mooradian on a 3-2 decision.
AUBURN HILLS - Brighton junior Aaron Calderon approached his state finals match (152 pound) like it was just another match. He looked at his opponent Detroit Catholic Central senior Alec Mooradian as just another wrestler. Just another wrestler looking to become only the 15th wrestler in state history to win four state titles. “He had everything to lose, I had everything to gain that helped me take the pressure off,” Calderson said, of the three-time defending champion. “He’s just a kid my age. I can be just as strong, just as fast and just as good. That was my mindset.” His mindset helped him pull of a stunning upset on Saturday night at The Palace of Auburn Hills.
