Suicide Draws Bomb Squad to Novi Apartments

Michigan State Police sent a robot into the man's home to determine if it was safe.

The incident that drew the Michigan State Police Bomb Squad to Novi's Shorebrooke Apartments Friday evening was a suicide, according to Novi police.

A Novi man killed himself Friday evening after telling a relative in an email that police would find his dead body the next day, according to Novi Assistant Police Chief Jerrod Hart.

The 59-year-old man emailed his relative, who lives in another state, shortly before shooting himself, he said, and she called Novi police. The man was found dead in his basement from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, he said.

Officers arrived at the door of the man's condominium at the apartment complex, which is located on Haggerty Road between 9 Mile and 10 Mile roads, and heard what sounded like a gunshot, Hart said.

Police evacuated the area after hearing the gunshot and called for assistance from a Special Response Team and state police, Hart said.

"The state police sent robots into the home to check if it was okay," he said.

Hart said there was no bomb, but the state police brought bomb squad vehicles as an added measure of safety.

Police are not yet releasing the man's name.
