Novi Principal Leaves District After Super Drunk Charges

Kim Warren asks to resign from her position as principal of Novi's Deerfield Elementary.

The Novi Community Schools board of education accepted Kim Warren's resignation as principal of Novi's Deerfield Elementary at a meeting Thursday night, according to Superintendent Steve M. Matthews.

Warren, 44, of Brighton, was arrested in April under the suspicion of being intoxicated on school grounds and was charged with “super-drunk” charges. She was using her sick days to be on paid leave, Matthews said.

Warren's resignation was listed under personnel recommendations on the board's agenda for Thursday's meeting.

"The board will not vote on it separately. It will be a part of the personnel report," he said.

When Warren was placed on administrative leave, Novi Meadows Elementary School sixth grade Principal Lisa Finchel was moved to Deerfield to serve in the interim. Novi Meadows teacher Matt Burry took Finchel's place as interim principal at Meadows.

Matthews said both Finchel and Burry will remain in their interim positions until the end of the school year.

"We are posting a job [opening], and I anticipate that we will have a person in place hopefully by July 1," he said.

Warren is not facing any penalty from the district, and her resignation went into effect after the board's official decision at the meeting.
