Novi Schools Wait to Announce Snow Day Decision

No decision has yet been made whether schools will be open Wednesday.

Kids around Novi have been enjoying an extended winter break this week, getting both Monday and Tuesday off because of the severe weather.

Wednesday is expected to have a high near 15 degrees with wind chill values as low as -19. Some districts, like Brighton Area Schools, have already announced a snow day for Wednesday. However, the Novi Community School District is waiting until Tuesday night to make a decision.

Superintendent Steve M. Matthews said in an email across the district Tuesday afternoon that no decision will be made whether to open schools Wednesday until after speaking with the district's weather consultants on a conference call Tuesday night.

"Assistant Superintendent Steve Barr and I drove the district this afternoon. Our maintenance staff has done a good job of preparing our parking lots. While a light covering of snow still remains and there is some ice in spots, overall our parking lots and sidewalks are in good shape," he said in the email.

He said the City of Novi has also done a good job of clearing the roads, and major streets are in good shape.

"Making a decision about opening or closing school is not a decision that I take lightly. I understand that reasonable people might disagree with whatever the decision may be. However, student and staff safety are primary concerns when decisions about whether to open or close are made," he said.

The snow day decision will be announced via an email sent across the district Tuesday evening. Check back with Novi Patch as more information is released.
